Conquer cravings with healthier options for any texture
We have all experienced food cravings and often those cravings have to do with texture, like something creamy or crunchy. Food textures play a big role in whether we like or dislike certain foods. Luckily, eating healthy includes foods of all sorts of textures and flavors. Here are some suggestions on satisfying your cravings with nutritious snacks of a variety of textures:
Creamy such as ice cream: replace sugary treats with berry smoothies. You can make them easily at home by blending fruit with ice and fat free milk.
Crunchy like pretzels and chips: replace salt loaded snacks with whole grain cereal, popcorn or unsalted nuts.
Liquid such as sugary soda: instead make lemon ice tea or ice water with fruits.
Squishy like jelly-like candies: instead munch on fresh grapes, tapioca pudding or cherry tomatoes with string cheese.
Crispy like salty crisp snacks: go for apples instead, particularly of varieties such as Braeburn, Honey Crisp, Fuji and Gala. Avoid Cortland, Red Delicious or Rome which can be softer. If you crave something less sweet, try red potatoes or white potatoes and don’t overcook. Avoid Russet potatoes which are perfect for mashed potatoes but not a crispy snack.
